GIRL BOSS: OWNER OF VEGAN NAIL POLISH LINE TANISHA LAWRENCE
Do it with passion or don't do it at all. Tanisha Lawrence born and raised in Brooklyn, NY is the owner of Law Beauty Essentials a contemporary line of vegan nail polish. LAW Beauty Essentials' pigments are high shine, chip-resistant, and makes for a flawless application every time. I started following Tanisha on Instagram after coming across her podcast interview. I was inspired by her hustle. Tanisha work full-time as a flight attendant while running her business. She continues to show up without making any excuses. Working in aviation can be a very demanding job and a lot to handle on your body but sis still made the effort to make her business a priority. Oh yeah! Her service is A1! I was impressed with the packaging and the shipment was on time! Today Tanisha will be sharing her story as an entrepreneur with the goal to motivate you all to chase your dreams.
What inspired you to start Law Beauty Essentials?
I can’t remember when I first thought I wanted to be an entrepreneur because its been that long ago! Honestly, I will say since I was in high school. I always knew I wanted to be a business owner, I just didn’t know what kind of business I would go into. It was in recent years, I looked deeper into my self, what I loved and what I deemed achievable. My first love for the beauty industry started with nail polish. While I was not able to wear make-up, I was able to do my nails, and that I did often. As I wrote out my business plan, and all the ideas I wanted to put into my business, I got inspired by the challenge. I was ready to put my ideas to the test and really make my dreams come true.
One thing I love about your brand is your creative nail polish names! My favorite is the “Net Worth Hoe Much” How did you get inspiration behind each one?
Coming up with the names for each polish is one of the most exciting parts. I often stare at the polish, literally twirling it around in my hand thinking “ What is the vibe of the color? What is it giving me?’ I try not to over think the name but it also has to have a flow.
How do you manage to run a business while working full-time?
Running a small business and working full time can be very challenging. For the most part I try to dedicate an hour a day to my business but some times that’s not possible. I check my emails daily and try to answer the easy ones right away. For the more complex ones that I can’t answer on the go, while on public transportation or a work break, I add to my to-do list.
I try to address something on my todo list everyday. I also take mental breaks.
What is your favorite part about being your own boss?
My favorite part about being my own boss is the other bosses I meet, people who are building a brand often like to connect with others who are also building a brand and before you know it you’ve created a new list of friends increasing your network, not to mention the formal introduction “ This is Tanisha, owner of LAW Beauty Essentials”. More importantly, my # 1 favorite part is that I TRIED. If never a house hold name, I know its known is many homes and that’s an accomplishment to me!
What is the most difficult challenge you've ever had to overcome and how did you overcome it?
Promoting myself and my brand as a business owned by a black woman but, not wanting to be held to a higher critiquing standard, or having to promote my self as a “black own business” which sometimes lead to a box.
Initially, I wanted my business to speak for itself and so I never promoted myself and my brand together. I hid behind my business. It took me a couple years doing things that way and I found no growth. I decided to reevaluate and look into the way I was operating my business and what I could change. I’ve been told often times people buy YOU before they buy your product.
I took it back to basics, when I first started I used to always say my business is a part of me. Where did that mindset go? I decided to bring “me” back, and now I’m currently launching products that I have a personal connection with.
What is one thing you wish you would have known before starting your own business?
Taxes! Im still learning this, and it is an ever changing and evolving process.
If you had one piece of advice for someone starting out what would it be?
My one piece of advise for someone starting out would be, try to do something every day, large or small to contribute to your business. This could be something important as building your website, or as small as reading an article that can teach you something new about your industry.
How do you de-stress after a long day?
After a long stressful day, my go to is music. Whether I’m able to blast it on my speakers, or put my headsets in and listen to my favorite songs. I also dance like no one is watching because I know no one is watching.
